Great Lakes Film Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
The Internal Revenue Service Code 501(c)(3), under which most nonprofits are registered, prohibits them from partisan political activities. It also limits nonprofits’ expenditures to influence legislation through lobbying to an “insubstantial” portion of an agency’s budget. But legal experts say these don’t constitute a ban on free speech.
Erie Phil Celebrates The
Music Of John Williams
by Karen Beardsley-Petit and
Rob Taylor
It kind of seems appropriate
that the day after the release of the newest Star Trek
movie that the Erie Philharmonic presents Star Wars And
Beyond featuring the music of John Williams (pictured
below) who has won numerous award for his thrilling movie
soundtracks
Williams’ movies include Raiders Of The Lost Ark, ET,
Harry Potter and the Star Wars movie double trilogy
The Erie Jr. Philharmonic will be featured on the Star
Wars Medley. Also featured on the program are saxophonist
Bruce Johnstone and pianist Kristine Denton, both of Erie.
In addition, Erie Art Museum Executive Director John Vanco
will guest conduct the Superman March from Superman.
“Each year a member of our community conducts the Erie
Philharmonic orchestra through one special piece of
music,” Erie Phil Executive Director Eric Borenstein
explained. “This year that honor goes to John Vanco, who
has not only transformed the museum in his 41-year tenure
but has positively affected the entire Erie arts
community.” Vanco will conduct the Erie Philharmonic to
raise funds for two of the premiere arts organizations in
our community.
"Baton" contributors will be treated to a reception
following the concert at the Erie Art Museum.
Also, look for members of the Garrison Carida, a chapter
of the 501st Legion serving Pennsylvania, Delaware and
West Virginia to meet and greet you in the Warner lobby.
Look for Darth Vader, storm troopers, biker scouts and
more!

A3 Adds Two To Rounding
Third
By Rob Taylor
All An Act Theatre has just announced that they have added
two more shows to their hit play Rounding Third.
Rounding Third follows the lives of Michael (David
Mitchell) and Don (Larry Lewis) who are polar opposites
when it come to the philosophy of sports, childrearing as
well as everything else.
Michael is a very laid back man who believes that sports
should not be competitive, he just thinks that the kids
should play the game just to have the fun of
participating. He loves his son, his son wants to play
baseball and, in order to spend time with his son he
becomes the new assistant coach. Unfortunately the closest
he has been to a baseball is a curling stone up in Canada.
Don, on the other hand is an asshole! He is the kind of
guy who believes that coming in second in life means you
are a loser and not worth his time. He will cheat,
threaten children and abuse anyone and everyone he comes
in contact with if it means that he could win by doing it.
Then he gets the news that his son quit the team to dance
in Brigadoon. It wasn't hard to see that he was hurt and
he took it out on everyone around him.
These two meet and as soon as they do the sparks begin to
fly and what comes out is the most realistic performance
that A3 has EVER put out. There are a lot of laughs but
there are such strong emotion between Michael and Don it
is hard not to want to come involved and get up and kick
Don’s ass.
Now, it is obvious that Rounding Third is a hit since they
have to add two shows on May 15-16 at 7:30 p.m. So the
people have found out what a good time it is. If you are
interested go to www.allanact.net for more information or
call 814-450-8553 for tickets

Risto Exhibit: The End Of
All Dreams At The Frame Shop Gallery
Kris Risto has a unique
vision, which he has been expressing in his artwork since
childhood. Fantastic things happen in Risto’s paintings.
The artist’s mystical visions combine religious imagery,
current events, science fiction, and images reflecting his
Balkan heritage. In this new exhibition, Risto’s recent
work reflects the change in his surroundings brought about
by a move to the country. “Slowly, the landscape seeped
into my subconscious, and so for the first time in my life
I began to paint it. Not
pure landscapes devoid of human presence, but landscapes
that serve as mystic backdrops for my characters— figures
from the past, present and (possibly) future.”
Risto’s paintings have always appeared to be
visualizations of his thoughts, just shaken up and poured
out onto the canvas. In this most recent work, the images
are presented clearly, and seem to directly address the
viewer. They brim with ideas, but their meaning can be
elusive.
“As I paint,” Risto says, “I
allow ideas to flow automatically, without concern for
rational order—the same way our minds work while dreaming.
I find a landscape or sky space that catches my attention,
then populate it with the irrational, which creates an
image that puzzles me. I often have to sit back after a
piece is completed and try to decipher its meaning. I
usually find insight into what I have been thinking about
subconsciously.”
The comparison with Surrealism is unavoidable. Like the
Surrealists, Risto presents us with surprising
juxtapositions that jog our minds, suggesting that these
are things we knew but must have forgotten. Also, he
embraces the validity of the dream as a form of both
experience and expression. Risto states, “I want the
viewer to experience a sensation similar to the confused
moment of uncertainty just before waking at the end of all
dreams.”
Kris Risto is a lifelong resident of Erie. He holds a BFA
degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
The End Of All Dreams will
run until July 11, 2009. For more information call

Category 1: Classical Christian Poetry
What do we mean by classical Christian poetry? Think of
the great poets of Christian history such as Fanny J.
Crosby (Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross, Blessed Assurance),
Frances R. Havergal (Like a River Glorious) and Charles
Wesley (And Can It Be That I Should Gain). These great men
and women wrote poetry with rhyme and meter, and their
work delved into deep Christian spiritual experience. Many
of these poems were intended as hymns, and even those not
initially intended to be accompanied by music have often
become beloved by us as they were put to music.
Category 1 poems must be written in stanzas of 4 lines
each. You may use any rhyming scheme you wish within this
4-lines-per-stanza framework, but your poem must not
exceed 28 lines plus title. If your poem is longer than 28
lines, enter it in Category 2 which permits poems up to 40
lines plus title.
In Category 1 our contest judges will demand that your
poem has accurate meter and good rhyme. Beyond that, your
work will be judged on its expressed spiritual content and
poetic qualities. We are looking for poems with overtly
Christian subject matter.
Punctuation in poetry may be used creatively, but spelling
errors will not be overlooked. After all, we are asking
for "Classical Christian Poetry." If you choose to write
using King James English (ie "thee," "thou," etc) be sure
to use the right terms and be consistent in their use.
Category 2: Rhyming Poetry (religious theme)
This category is for rhyming poetry that falls outside of
the 4-lines-per-stanza format, or is longer than 28 lines.
This category could include sonnets, for example, or other
styles of rhyming poetry. Poetry in this category—like
Category 1—is also required to have an expressly religious
theme.
In Category 2 your poem can be up to 40 lines in length
(plus title) and your style can incorporate non-standard
meter (or no rigid meter). Beyond that, your work will be
judged on its expressed spiritual content and poetic
qualities. We are looking for poems with overtly Christian
subject matter.
Punctuation in poetry may be used creatively, but spelling
errors will not be overlooked.

A public opening reception will be held in on Friday, May 8, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. in conjunction with the Museum’s $9 million expansion and renovation project

patent! The submission of the application for the design patent is courtesy of Erie law firm MacDonald Illig Jones & Britton. One Best in Show Award (selected by the public during the exhibition) and three first place prizes will offered in-kind
InnovationErie partner services.
The semi-finalists’ list will be narrowed down by the competition’s independent panel of judges to four finalists, who will be given time for a 10-minute presentation and 10-minute question and answer session with the panel. Ryan Bookhamer, Sling-Footwear Carrier The Sling Footwear Carrier is designed to be durable, lightweight, UV protected, waterproof, and quick drying. The product has been developed to carry, aerate, and protect shoes in an organized fashion. Sling is designed to be easily held in one hand or clipped to a bag.
Ryan Bookhamer, Slise A new series of knives designed to revolutionize the knife market. The Slice Knife Products are designed to displace the Maximum Force to the entire cutting edge, resulting in an easier, more efficient and superior cutting experience.
Alexandra Davis, The DecoTree The DecoTree is a contemporary accessory stand that encourages young girls to put away their own accessories while having fun decorating it. It has a triple purpose – first, girls pretend-play; second, they clean up their own clutter; and third, the DecoTree itself, is a trendy accessory to their rooms.
Kathy Kelly, BookBag The BookBag is a purse made out of recycled book covers.
Dan L’Huillier, The Shark The Shark will perform the same function as a traditional starter’s pistol but will be clearly distinguishable from a firearm.
Kathleen Ann Moore, Ori-Koppu A fully self-contained coffee cup that is disposable, biodegradable with insulating elements and a lid built into one piece.
Deepak Pahuja, MD, Disposable Stethoscope This is a disposable one-time use cover for stethoscope chest piece with a rollable neck. It provides protection between the hands of the user and the stethoscope when examining patients.
Michael Richardson, Universal Rhythm Guitar Pick A round (vs. triangular) guitar pick with an embossed design on both sides for grip.
Glen Sanders, Wildside Sport Helmet A children’s helmet designed to promote fun, safety, and creativity. The best way to describe this is bike helmet meets Mr. Potato Head. Throw in a fanny pack to carry and hold all of the character pieces and you have the “Wildside Sport Helmet”.
Violet Steinbacher, VI Glarz VI Glarz are a type of visor that fits on sunglasses or regular glasses, and cuts out the glare. They are made of soft foam, lie flat and are lightweight.

Thomas Unger, Non-Metallic Cable Racks This reinforced polymer cable rack system is designed to replace existing metal racks and for new installation in underground power distribution. The rack system allows for mechanical support of power cables and eliminates a potential electrical shock and fire hazard posed by antiquated metal rack systems.
R. Jason Wieczorek, The Charmer The Charmer is an alternative to the common grocery store shopping basket. In addition to functional improvements, it incorporates a refreshing aesthetic appeal.
Erika & Jackie Zehner, Sunflower Shower A decorative showerhead in the shape of a sunflower for added style in bath.
