Himini -- A Strange Name For Good
Music
by Rob Taylor
There is a band around town who is gaining
in popularity despite their really strange name. That name is Himini.
Himini is an acoustic duet consisting of two singers and a guitar
player. The band's members are world renowned
tambourine player Kimberly Gray and the legendary Erie singer/guitarist
Mark Stockhausen, who used to perform with Rick McGee and the Roadhouse
Rockers as well as performing in acoustic duet with Rick McGee for 20+
years.
Stockhausen found Norfolk, Virginia native Gray on the
internet. He was on-line looking for a girlfriend and she was looking
for a guitar player to perform with her. That was six months ago. He
found her search for a guitarist and,
once they met, that magic happened and the band, as well as a new love,
was formed. Stockhausen is and always has been an Erie native.
Both members of Himini said that their name has been a source of
confusion for everyone, in pronunciation as well as people who introduce
them at shows.
From just looking at the name it would be easy to assume that the name
is “he-me-nee”. It is so confusing that when they were booked for a
cancer benefit last January the name brought up images of a band playing
Arab music, sitar music or Jamaican Reggae.
The truth is the name is pronounced “Him and I” which makes it rough for
people introducing the band because it always comes out, ”…and I would
like to welcome to the stage Him and I.” Stockhausen said that, in order
to eliminate the confusion he always starts the intro and lets Gray
finish with the “Himini” part.
Gray said that the name came naturally from the fact they, since they
are a real life couple in addition to being a musical duet they always
did things together so it was always “Him and I” doing things so they
adopted the phrase and a name for their band after an evolution with
included the even more confusing “Him & I.”
Stockhausen
said that clubs love them to appear because, since they do not have a
full band, full stage production or a lot of electric instruments, they do not
use the same amount of electricity that other bands so he said that they
are the greenest band in the area.
“People also say that they love our acoustic style of music because they
can go to a bar or club and not have to yell back and forth to have a
conversation,” Gray added. “But, believe me, we are not always mellow….we
rock!”
Stockhausen said that their music ranges from Carole King to Led
Zeppelin to Janis Joplin and everything in-between. They said that it
isn’t the traditional kind of music that acoustic bands play. They like
all of the classic rock songs and love playing them.
The biggest honor Himini said that they have received since forming was
the chance to perform the national anthem at the Soldiers & Sailors home
in Erie. They both said that they were nervous singing the song. They
didn’t want to do a “Rosanne Barr” or change the song the way a lot of
singers do.
“It was a special honor for us,” Gray said. “We wanted to do the song
the way it supposed to be done and we did. The thing was, when we
finished everyone loved it.” She added that they made sure to follow
tradition and face the flag when they sang. Everyone else attending was
watching the two of them.
They said that they perform because they have a love for music. Gray
said that she started loving music at the age of five.
“I would be singing in my room and people would be standing outside the
window just listening to me.
Now, she still sings to crowds who just show up to listen. When they
aren’t singing in a club she and Stockhausen can be found down on Beach
10 on the Peninsula. “We start playing and singing and the people just
gather.” Stockhausen added that one day they were singing and, as usual,
a crowd gathered around them. He looked out at the break wall and saw
that it was covered with seagulls. He said that they started singing
every bird song they knew to the enjoyment of the crowd.
Himini will be playing at Ashley’s Pub located at 342 Main St in
Spartansburg, Pa on June 10th and the Fairview Legion on June 13th.
Himini can also be seen at a number of local clubs including The Last
Shot, the Lakeside Tavern and Pine Junction in Findley Lake, New York
where, Stockhausen says, that Pine Junction has the best bonfire and the
best hamburger around.
For a complete schedule of Himini’s appearances or more information
about the band check out
www.myspace.com/himini.
Writer's Note: I went to see Himini
at Bullshooter's last Saturday night and what I saw amazed me. For their
being just an acoustic duet they had more energy in their performance
that most other full powered bands have. The people were singing along
and enjoying every song they sang. I will definitely go see them again if
I get the chance.

Summertime Is Poetry Time In Erie
by Amontillado Kerouac-Gazookus
Several upcoming poetry events shine from the distance of the future
like lights in a night on the high plains.
That's right. On Friday June 19, 6:30, at the Erie Book Store, Joe
Gallagher will be the featured poet. Joe might be Erie's most intense
poet. He gets around, rocking crowds at artistic and music events, going
back to the golden days of Blue Cat Stew. Lately he's been showing up at
Poetry Scene, improvising poetry on the spot, making stuff from nothing,
between reading text, works in a voice that channels Eugene O'Neill or
maybe his characters. That's Friday, June 19. An open will precede the
feature.
On Saturday June 27 at 7, Poetry at the Park, at Frontier Park, brought
to us through the LEAF organization (thank you, KD). That's right,
Frontier Park. Imagine a gentle summer evening, storms threatening from
the west, you settle gently to the grass, ready for the poetry
experience while an all-star cast of indigenous wordsmiths mount the
gazebo stage to bring their poetry to you. Kat Blair, Zach Haras, Thasia,
Monica, Cee Williams, Geoff Peterson, Chuck Joy, Mycela Rue. You might
think it's music or maybe a movie. I sure will. Produced by Heidi
Blakeslee, who might end with an open if there's even time.
And that's not all. The Erie Summer long Jazz Festival will once again
include two swinging Nights of Jazz Poetry at the Erie Book Store,
Friday June 26 and Friday July 31, both at 6:30. You can't know what to
expect when jazz and poetry get together but you can know it must be
good. Will Chuck recite "Flamenco Sketches"? Will Joanie sing? And what
about Kurt? As always, McCoy Tyner (recorded) will open. Still free
admission.
Finally, and best, rising in the east like a fabulous sunrise, the Erie
County Poetry Initiative Poet Laureate Performance Event. Still being
prepped at press time, so stay tuned, current plans land this red-carpet
extravaganza at the Erie Playhouse late July or early August, on a night
like Thursday. Finalists for Erie County's inaugural Poet Laureate
position will spit their best for the public and a five-member panel of
judges, an earnest jury who will have their work cut out for them. Be
there to help! If not as an applicant, then as a guest. And bring your
entourage and papparazi with you. The winner, Erie County's first Poet
Laureate, will be announced in September.
End transmission. Your intrepid correspondent me, Amontillado, has to
move on to preparing for his next romantic getaway, Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Hey, Rosie, look at this!
Eastside Store Wants To Help Promote
Erie Music
By T.R. Septaric
Up on East 38th St is a little store called Beth and Lisa’s Resale
Shop. It has a lot of stuff like books, clothes and other things that
you would expect to see in any other second hand store. The thing is
co-owners Beth Fairfield and Lisa Pohl want to take it beyond what it is
now and make it a store that makes a difference in the Erie area music
scene.
Beth said that they want to take a wall of the store and use it to
promote local bands by giving them a place to sell t-shirts, CDs,
posters and other merchandise.
“We are making the space available to any local band of any genre,”
Beth said.
Cheap Thrill is one of the bands currently taking advantage of Beth and
Lisa’s offer. They are selling tickets through the store for a charity
event they have planned in the near future.
“We have a lot of customers who are college students,” she said. “They
come in for clothes, books and other items. We think this is the perfect
location for a central place for local bands to have their stuff.”
Beth & Lisa’s Resale shop is located at 1218 East 38th St. in
Erie. Check them out at www.myspace.com/475957759 or call them at

Pro Wrestling Fantasy Camp Scheduled
For June
By Rob Taylor
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a professional
wrestler or a manager or even a referee? Do you think that being chopped
by a wrestler doesn’t hurt? Now, you have your chance. Erie’s Pro
Wrestling Rampage is holding a wrestling fantasy camp on June 20th at
Noon at the Cauley Auditorium, 215 E. 4th St in Erie to give you the
chance to feel the experience first hand.
The camp will focus on cardio training and exercise, in ring maneuvers
and endurance. Some of the “classes” they held last year included how to
properly clothes line a wrestler, how to take a chop and much more.
Now, you are NOT going to be taught by the B list wrestlers on the PWR
roster. You are going to learn from the best of the best including
Lumberjack La Roux and Omega Aaron Draven.
I was at the fantasy camp although I didn’t take part…I was there to
interview Omega…and believe me, from what I saw, you WILL get the whole
experience. I asked Omega to demonstrate how to properly do a chop…a
basic wrestling move. He showed me, on my chest, and it burned for a
good 45 minutes afterward.
You have to be 16 years of age to take part in the event and you will
have to sign a waiver that you are solely responsible for any injuries.
Those under 18 will have to have their parents co-sign the waiver. Plus
there is a nonrefundable fee of $25 to be able to take part.
The management of Pro Wrestling Rampage wants to emphasize that this is
a FANTASY camp. Once you complete it…you are not a trained wrestler or a
member of PWR. It is just for fun and to give you a taste of what pro
wrestlers go through for their careers.
Glenn Beck's Common Sense Tour Set
To Run At Tinseltown
by Rob Taylor
Fox News, formerly CNN Headline News,
personality Glenn Beck will be holding a live comedy event presented by
NCM Fathom and the Mercury Radio Network entitled Glenn Beck’s Common
Sense Tour Live from the Midland Theatre in Kansas City.
The show will feature Beck’s semi-ultra-conservative observations of the
way the American people live and how the common sense that people are
supposed to be born with isn’t so common in America anymore. It is said
that he will not let anyone escape his wrath. He is going to be going
after everyone including entertainers and politicians, including those
in his beloved Washington D.C.
If you have been to a movie at Tinseltown or the Dollar Movies you’ve
seen the trailer for this show. If you haven’t it is rather inventive.
It is just a close of Beck with a big tear running down his face with a
narration saying that Beck is crying to get all his sadness out of his
system so he’ll be able to be funny on June 4th,
For anyone who hasn’t seen his afternoon TV show Beck has a biting wit
the rivals any of the comedians around today. With his ADHD and sense of
humor this promises to be a great night of laughter.
The Glenn Beck’s Common Sense Tour will be shown on June 4th at 8:00
with an encore on June 11th both shows will be at Erie’s Tinseltown.
For more information, or to order tickets, check out
www.fathomevents.com or you can purchase tickets at the Tinseltown box
office.

Announcing

Erie, PA:
The
Intimacies of Time by artist Jan Lutz showing May 1 to June 5,
2009. The artist's reception is Friday May 1 7 to 9 pm. The public
is invited to attend.
Jan
Lutz's artwork is technically fascinating, emotive, and tender.
Her subjects are plant and human forms that share delicate
gestures, armatures that link us with a shared portion of DNA. Jan
paints in veiled forms overlapping transparent colors, creating an
eloquent vocabulary to her narrative portrayals. The assignment of
light is subtle and judicial as it is shared by the entire
picture. The tone is softened with the understated color palette.
The delicate quality of her brushstrokes conveys an overall
reverence for her subject matter, whether it is a human figure or
a budding lotus blossom.
Her
personal statement reads as follows: "I am continually
fascinated with the beauty and intelligence of the natural world,
of which we are an integral part. The limitless combinations
of colors, forms, patterns and textures in nature compel me to
re-create my impressions, to preserve the timelessness of a person
or place. A recurrent theme in my work is the universality
and interconnectivity of life in all its forms. The
experience of seeing inspires the discipline of doing---with
all of its surprises, diversions and challenges. It is the
process, the act of losing oneself to the state of sartori where
seemingly effortless creation occurs, more than the finished work
that teaches and feeds me."

writing contest to find the next Mark Twain.
One of Twain’s

Drop
- Horror Story Printed On Toilet Roll
“Drop”
is the latest book by Koji
Suzuki, the author of the famous horror story “Ring”.
TOKYO – In a
country where ghosts are traditionally believed to hide in the loo,
a Japanese company is advertising a new literary experience — a
horror story printed on toilet paper.
Each
roll carries several copies of a new nine-chapter novella written
by Koji Suzuki, the Japanese author of the horror story
“Ring,” which has been made into movies in both Japan and
Hollywood.
“Drop,” set in a
public restroom, takes up about three feet (90 centimeters) of a
roll and can be read in just a few minutes, according to the
manufacturer, Hayashi Paper.
The company promotes
the toilet paper, which will sell for 210 yen ($2.20) a roll, as
“a horror experience in the toilet.”
Toilets in Japan
were traditionally tucked away in a dark corner of the house due
to religious beliefs. Parents would tease children that a hairy
hand might pull them down into the dark pool below.
