Great Lakes Film Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
The Internal Revenue Service Code 501(c)(3), under which most nonprofits are registered, prohibits them from partisan political activities. It also limits nonprofits’ expenditures to influence legislation through lobbying to an “insubstantial” portion of an agency’s budget. But legal experts say these don’t constitute a ban on free speech.

Check your bank balance! Starbucks double-charges one million customers
Bruce Watson
On May 22 and 23, Starbucks (SBUX) overcharged approximately one million of its customers. The Memorial Day mistake, which the coffee chain is calling a "settlement processing error," has allegedly been resolved, but has left many customers concerned about the security of their credit card and debit card transactions.
At more than 7,000 Starbucks stores, customers were double-charged for their purchases. Essentially, when the company settled its bank transactions at the end of the day, it withdrew twice the actual purchase amount.
One disturbing aspect of this incident is the fact that the receipts the store issued were factually correct, which means that even the most vigilant customers would have been unable to detect the mistake at the point of sale. In fact, the only way that customers could have noticed the error would have been if they carefully reviewed their bank statements.
Some customers have claimed that they have not received their refunds, but Starbucks says that it is working quickly to settle all accounts. If you think that you were overcharged and have not been reimbursed, the best thing to do is call Starbucks' customer service.
Of course, any time there is a mix-up like this, conspiracy theories quickly develop. Some have suggested that the error was a quick and easy way for Starbucks to raise a few million dollars before it finished up its quarter. However, given that the company tried to rectify the error by May 29, the company would not actually carry the extra money to the end of the quarter. In all likelihood, this was exactly what it appears to be -- an honest (and costly) mistake, caused by a computer glitch.
In many ways, that explanation is actually far more disturbing. As one analyst noted, credit overcharges are very common; while most are later rectified by retailers, some slip through the cracks. Moreover, given that the vast majority of credit and debit transactions are for relatively small purchases, customers are less likely to notice little errors. Eventually, these small mistakes can add up to big money.
The moral of the story is clear: if you use a credit or debit card, check your balance sheet regularly!

Art After Dark Sparks “inner-artist”
Erie Art Museum offers a la’carte art
class
For Erie Art Museum Education
Coordinator Stephanie Campbell, launching the Museum’s newest art class is about
discovering a new facet of your abilities. “In this relaxed studio atmosphere, new
art projects are started each week exploring different media, artists and styles of
art,” said Campbell. “Each project is created following a guided step-by step process
which still encourages personal creativity.”
According to Campbell, this step-by-step
process is a “user-friendly” approach to taking
an art class. “So many times, we think
‘I’d like to do that’ and then become intimidated
thinking that ‘I don’t’ have any
artistic ability’. What’s great about Art After Dark
is that
I will take an almost paint-by-numbers
approach that will guide beginners and challenge
more advanced students to work with new
media and new techniques.”
“This class is also great for anyone who
has wandered through the aisles of an arts and
crafts store with excitement and
enthusiasm – only to walk out empty handed, bogged
down with reality and excuses. If you find
yourself getting creative in cooking, gardening, decorating – chances are, it’s
your “inner artist” searching for a creative outlet,” said Campbell.
Art After Dark is held each Friday evening
for six weeks beginning June 19 from 7:15-
9:15 p.m. at the Erie Art Museum, 423
State Street. Cost is $60 for Museum members
and $95 for non-members and includes all
supplies. Participants can also pay per class,
selecting specific weeks, for $20/class.
For more information or to see a schedule
of weekly projects, visit www.erieartmuseum.org.

Fifteen Ways To Know
If You Live In 2009
by Rob Taylor
1. You accidentally enter
your PIN on the microwave..

2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.
3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your
family of three.
4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to
you.
5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and
family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.
6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell
phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the
groceries.
7. Every commercial on television has a website at the
bottom of the screen.
8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you
didn't even have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your
life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go
and get it.
10. You get up in the morning and go on-line before
getting your coffee
11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )
12. You're reading this and
nodding and laughing.
13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to
forward this article to.
14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this
list.
15. You actually scrolled back up to check that there
wasn't a #9 on this list
