Great Lakes Film Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
The Internal Revenue Service Code 501(c)(3), under which most nonprofits are registered, prohibits them from partisan political activities. It also limits nonprofits’ expenditures to influence legislation through lobbying to an “insubstantial” portion of an agency’s budget. But legal experts say these don’t constitute a ban on free speech.

Making Dreams Come True One Ticket At A Time
By Amanda Everett
In this lifetime there are opportunities afforded to each and
every one of us to make a difference in the life of another.
Regardless of how great the impact you make on
another’s life, the initiative you took to make the difference
is the key factor.
What sets you apart from your coworkers? What
makes you a better person? Do you drop your money in the
collection plate on Sunday, perhaps volunteer at a soup kitchen
around the holidays? These offerings never go unappreciated, but
what if there was something more you could do, something simple as
a Sea Wolves game, a day at Waldameer, or a show at the Erie
Playhouse?
Our community is full of exciting events that most of
us take for granted. Imagine a child who has never been to one of
these events because mom and dad are busy working two jobs each
just to get by. There’s no time, there’s no money. Economic
hardship is a reality the children of today face without having a
clue what it means, without knowing why mom and dad can’t stop
arguing, and believing that fun filled events are reserved for a
better part of society in which they simply do not fit.
Why should a child ever go without? It’s no secret that the
children of our communities are the hope for tomorrow. If they are
denied the simple joys of life, what will happen to them in the
future? Where will they go? What will they become?
Pittsburgh-based nonprofit organization Tickets for Kids Charities
is working tirelessly to give hope to these children who otherwise
may never have a chance to participate fully in the enriching
resources their community has to offer.
Since 1994, Tickets for Kids Charities has committed to
enriching the lives of the underprivileged children and their
families. By obtaining tickets to wholesome, high caliber arts
& cultural, educational, sporting, and family entertainment
events and then donating those tickets to hundreds of nonprofit
organizations that chaperone thousands of children and their
families to the events, Tickets for Kids Charities fulfills its
mission.
All
children benefit from and deserve to be included in community
events. Through participation in events, children learn more about
themselves and the endless possibilities their community has to
offer. Children and youth develop socially and academically,
discover new interests, create healthy relationships with adult
mentors, and share special moments with their family members in
safe, positive environments. In order to maintain that the events
are positive to children who are socially, emotionally,
physically, and psychologically underserved, Tickets for Kids
Charities has developed a very thorough process of matching and
evaluating agencies and events. Each agency is screened and
trained before becoming a partner to ensure appropriateness and
value to the children of the community. When assessing the ability
of this organization to match wonderful events with deserving
children and families, Tickets for Kids Charities does not charge
a fee for agencies and organizations to work with them.
When the children of a community get to experience everything
their community has to offer, they are more likely to love and
respect that place that has loved and respected them. No child
should ever believe they do not deserve to be a part of the
community in which they live and Tickets for Kids Charities
devotes its energy to making the underserved population of their
region an integral part of the community.
Partnered with 950 agencies, providing $4.3 million in
opportunities to over 167,000 deserving children and their
families in 2008, Tickets for Kids Charities intends to
significantly increase the number of experiences available in 2009
and they are certainly on the right track.
For more information on this worthwhile cause, check out www.ticketsforkids.org.

Eclectic Etceteras -- Hard To Say
But Worth The Trip
by Rob Taylor
If get a chance to drive down to Edinboro
you you’ll notice a lot of stores and shops along Erie Street,
Edinboro’s main drag but there is one that will definitely stand out. It
is just south of Rt. 6N and it is not a store per se. It looks more like
the houses you read about in fairy tales and that is appropriate since
it houses a coffee shop called Eclectic Etceteras Coffeehouse.
Owner, Renee Thayer-Allison says that it helps to be drunk or heavily
caffeinated to be able to say the name of her shop but it reflects the
philosophy that she wants the shop to have. “The name Eclectic Etceteras
means many things and many places and that is what we want to have
here.”

Eclectic Etceteras is what Thayer-Allison says is a “communiversity”.
She said that her customers aren’t just college students. She said that
they get all types and all ages of people coming in. “The people coming
in aren’t just college students. They range in age from 2 years old to
92.” She added anyone is welcome to come and hang out.
The coffeehouse does have musicians scheduled to come in to play usually
on Saturday afternoons from 1:00 until 3:00 and they never charge a
cover to listen to their performers. But, she said, in addition to the
scheduled shows, any musician can stop in at anytime and just jam.
“People will be driving through Edinboro, hear the music and stop by.”
She added that the people hang out, talk and have fun and that is what
she wants. There is only one rule for musicians that Thayer-Allison says
that she strictly enforces…no musician is permitted to play a cover or
anything that sounds like a cover. “If they start playing a cover they
are done,” she said adding that there is a lot of originality in the
shop and she wants it to be seen in the music performed there.
Their menu lists 36 flavors of coffee, pastries (which are bake right at
the shop) and smoothies (made with fresh fruit) as well as a list of
other things too numerous to mention. Thayer-Allison said that she will
make any custom flavor coffee a customer asks for and she brags that she
can make coffees that, “tastes just like any candy bar around.”
However, Eclectic Etceteras isn’t just coffee or food. The walls are
lined with locally produced art as well as locally written books. They
even carry their own line of beach stone/beach glass jewelry called
Double E Jewelry. “We make every piece by hand,” she says. Every piece
displayed is unique and well crafted.
Eclectic Etceteras is all about the community, the people who live there
and they want to bring everyone together in one big community. To help
do that they have helped to promote musicians, artists and music
festivals from Edinboro as well as all over Erie and Crawford counties.
This is found in a quote from Eclectic Etceteras which says, “To change
things globally, we have to start in our own backyard. Help a neighbor.
Smile at a stranger. Lend a hand without expecting anything in return.
Many small acts will add up to one huge change. Take a stand. Make a
difference. Get involved.”
Eclectic Etceteras is open from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Mon thru Sat and
8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. on Sundays. For more information about Eclectic
Etceteras call 814-734-2909, email Renee at

Two Major Title Matches Planned For
PWR’s June 20th Show
By Rob Taylor
At last month’s Pro Wrestling Rampage show Sassy Stephanie and Angel
Dust signed a contract, for what they thought was going to be a title
match against PWR Women's Champion Brittney Force. Accidentally they signed a contract, not
for a match with Force but for a match against PWR Tag Team Champions – the
800 + pound Bone Crushers. With the help of Real Smooth and the
“Chairman Of The Board” Stephanie and Angel Dust pinned a member of the
Bone Crushers and won the PWR Tag Team Championship.
On June 20th PWR will be returning to the Cauley Auditorium, 215 East
4th St to settle some scores, fulfill a contractual obligation and
feature and rare eight man tournament to name the new PWR United States
Championship.
Matches for the evening include:
By order of the PWR Commissioner the main event of the evening will be
for the PWR Heavyweight
Championship between champion “Big Time” Bill
Collier and the winner of the “Money In The Bank Match”, “Sexy” Shawn
Blaze.
The one night only, eight man tournament for the PWR United States
Championship featuring: “Omega” Aaron Draven, Lumberjack Laroux, Rocky
Reynolds, Ivan Radsky, The Ceasar and others.
Also appearing on June 20th will be PWR Tag Team Champions Sassy Stephie
& Angel Dust, The Bone Crushers, Real Smooth, J-Rocc, Shane Taylor &
more.
Tickets are $15 for reserved front row (must be reserved by e-mail), $10
adult general admission, $5 child general admission and $5 for college
and high school students (must present school ID). Matches start at 7:30
p.m.

Cowboy Junkie To Appear At Mercyhurst On
June 21st
by Amontillado Kerouac-Gazookus
Get
the Cowboy Junkies right. They are musicians, yes, creating sound
environments, wizards, producing altered states disguised as songs.
Cowboy Junkies feature a female singer, only occasional male voices.
Lyrics to listen to, in English. I can’t detect a Canadian accent, can
you?
Their usual groove is melancholy, plenty, a dark and lonely place in
the heart, where the walls are brick and the only new thing is a new
way to go down. A frozen corner of Duluth, gloved fingers texting on a
cell phone, no sign of any sleigh crossing the full moon.
They like to lope, the Cowboy Junkies, maintaining that horsey rhythm
and you’re Daddy, walking five year-old Lucille around the pony track,
where was that, Wellsboro? Maybe you’re the five year-old.
And as for covers, “Sweet Jane”, sure, but what about “Walking After
Midnight”? Mostly the Cowboy Junkies play originals. You might
recognize one.
Here’s hoping the Cowboy Junkies hit the heights, like “Working On A
Building”. I’m ready to be transformed, me and Rosie, shoulder to
shoulder, living in the present moment, and it’s this Sunday, the
sonic environment a virtual church, engaging our deepest beliefs.

Summer Solstice Celebration On June
21
Snow Water Grove, ADF Summer Solstice June
21st (Contact for location) It's with great pleasure that the druids of
Snow Water Grove, ADF would like to invite all folks of the community to
join in celebration of Midsummer on Sunday June 21st.
The time of year when we honor the height of the Sun in all Her glory,
and her standing still if but for a brief time, within a Norse style
ritual.

The celebration will be held at private property on route 27 at the
Crawford County/Venango County line with pre-ritual briefing for song
learning and what to expect during ritual at 3pm, and ritual to commence
at 4:00pm.For detailed directions to the site, please email the address
at the bottom of the article, and we'd be happy to give further
information. Parking is limited and if organizers know you are coming
they can help provide safe parking.
This is a primitive camp space, with little facilities, so come
prepared, there are no structures or power on the property. The only
heat source will be a fire.
A pot luck feast will follow the ritual, as usual (think camp food)
Donations welcomed, but not required, which helps us plan for rental
space in the winter months and improvements to the land for future use.
Donations of non-perishable food will also be collected to bolster the
Unitarian Universalists food pantry efforts, as well as rechargeable
batteries (including old cell phone or computer batteries, as long as
they're under 11lbs). We very much appreciate any efforts. If you have
questions about the event, or need directions to the rite please feel
free to contact us at
info@snowwatergrove.org.

Erie
River Rats and Second Harvest Food Bank Team Up to Tackle Hunger
On
Saturday night, June 27, 2009, the Erie RiverRats will host the
defending AIFA champion Florence Phantoms at the Tullio Arena in
the season finale for both teams. The Erie RiverRats and the
Second Harvest Food Bank are teaming up on this special occasion
to help tackle hunger in the Erie area, and we need your help.
The
Second Harvest Food Bank is a nonprofit charitable organization
committed to the premise that all persons have the right to
adequate nutrition.
In
1982, its first year of operation, Second Harvest distributed
444,916 pounds of food to 40 agencies. In 2008, Second Harvest
distributed over 7 million pounds of food to more than 300 member
agencies.
Unfortunately,
it still isn’t enough and more needs to be done. That’s where
we all come in.
The
Erie RiverRats are asking the great football fans of Erie to help
us collect food that Second Harvest can distribute to those that
desperately need it. In appreciation of a donation of
non-perishable food items, the Erie RiverRats are giving out
vouchers redeemable at the Tullio Arena Box office as part of our
special ticket price offer to support the Second Harvest Food
Bank. The BUY ONE GET ONE FREE Ticket Offer is $12.00 and 50% of
the proceeds from this program will be donated by the Erie
RiverRats to the Second Harvest Food Bank in honor of our great
fans.
For
advance ticket sales to purchase the “Erie Tackles Hunger” BUY
ONE GET ONE FREE Ticket Promotion, please visit the Tullio Arena
Box Office or call them at 814-452-4857.
Proceeds
from sales will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Erie

VIRTUAL NEW YORK
by Chuck Joy
Rick grinned
glad to see him, Drew
Laura grinned, too
How do you do?
Your new space, Drew
asked, Let’s see it
inside, a stage
had been cleared, the walls
painted, Tuscan yellow
sky blue trim, chairs
nicely assembled,
a coffee service, yes
