A
Little Bit Of The Tropics Coming To Liberty Park

This
weekend, August 7th and 8th, Liberty Park on the Erie Bayfront will be
changed into Key West, Florida when Key West Phest opens. Organizers
say that the event is 2 great days of fun entertainment for FREE!
There is wonderful food provided by local vendors and fun activities
for children.
Key West Phest is celebrating its 6th year and organizers say that
this is going to be its biggest year ever. With bands like Key West
Express, The Geek Army and the Duke Sherman Band performing at the
Pepsi Amphitheatre both nights promise to rock the day away the way a
beach party should.
Organizers not only made sure that the music and food was going to be
killer but they made it a point to do something special for the
kids…that they affectionately call Parakeets. They have set up a
special area called Parakeet Island that is filled with activities
just for the little ones. These events include hair braiding, Brad’s
Bounce A Lot and ton of crafts and other activities the kids can take
part in.
At 3:00 p.m. on the 8th Key West
Phest takes to the water when a whole flotilla of boats, both
big and small, will fill the bay in a colorful parade with
each boat decorated in a “Stars On The Water Theme”.

This IS a very popular event and
on site parking will fill up fast but they do offer “premium
parking” for $15.00 for 1 day or $25.00 for both days. This
will allow you to come and go as you please without the worry
of having to find a parking place.
EMTA will also provide
shuttle service from the Intermodal Centre, The Blasco Library
and the parking area at the corner of I79 and Lincoln Ave. the
shuttles service will run continuously starting at 3 p.m on
Friday and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday
Kiss-in
Protest To Be Held At The County Courthouse

There
are a lot of forms of protest. They range from sit-ins, to picketing,
to flash mobs and civil disobedience and it is the non-violent
demonstrations that end wars, change laws, increase awareness and
create an atmosphere for social change On August 15th at
exactly 2:00 p.m. EST there is planned a nationwide protest to stop
the discrimination against people in love and that protest is called
the Great Nationwide Kiss-in.
Two
bloggers David Badash and David Mailloux started the event because of
their belief that any person anywhere should be able to kiss whomever
they want, whenever they want.
They
started planning the Great Nationwide Kiss-in after gay and lesbian
couples in San Antonio, TX, El Paso, TX and Salt Lake City, UT were
harassed or detained by law enforcement or other people for the simple
act of kissing in a public place. “We need to make a strong
statement to everyone everywhere: kissing is not a bad thing, nor has
it ever been. It's not vulgar or inappropriate. It's a sign of
affection that is as old as time itself. And it's a beautiful thing
that we share with our loved ones every single day,” organizers
said.
Badash
said, “I’ll
be damned if someone – citizen, neighbor, or the police – thinks
they can tell me I can’t hold my boyfriend’s hand while walking
down the street, or kiss him in public. And yes, I’ve been called
“f****t” while kissing him on a street corner.
Enough
is enough. It’s time we call these “peace officers” out. It’s
time we showed them love can’t be stopped. It’s time for a
nation-wide kiss-in and it’s important we do it in an organized,
public, non-confrontational, but well-publicized manner.”
For those of you who want to know
exactly what a kiss-in is…to put it simply…on
the suggested date and time, in a public place - whether it's a park
or plaza or popular thoroughfare in your city or town - you'll bring
your husband or wife or partner or boyfriend or girlfriend or good
friend, and at 2 p.m., you'll kiss. It's one of the simplest things in
the world to do!
Now,
this isn’t like the marathon kisses you see at some kiss-ins where
you see wo can kiss the longest. You can give a deep passionate kiss,
a loving kiss or the kind of peck on the cheek you would give your
mother or sister. It is up to you! Any kind of kiss is a sign of affection that is as old as time
itself. And it's a beautiful thing that we share with our loved ones
every single day.
Erieites
Michael Mahler and Mary Zuck have been working together to get
something going here and now Erie is having its own GNKI event on
Saturday, August 15th, at exactly 2 PM, on the front steps of the Erie
County Court House, 140 W 6th St, Erie PA. Arrive early to get
ready to join people in the Nationwide Kiss-In. People
of all sexual orientations are welcome. Bring your family and
friends: this is a fun "G" event.

Krispy
Kreme’s Erie’s Sweetest Tourist Attraction

When I was a kid in Akron, Ohio, I was lucky enough to live
just three blocks from my local Krispy Kreme doughnut shop so
it was my favorite hangout. My junior high school, West Jr.
High, was just across the street from there and I got more
than, a lot more, than a couple of hours of detention for
sneaking off of school grounds and heading over to Krispy
Kreme for a doughnut or two during lunch.
When I moved up here I was
surprised to see that Erie didn’t have a Krispy Kreme. So a
few times a year I would drive home, buy a few dozen and, the
few that made it back to Erie, would be frozen so I could
enjoy them until the next time I went down.
In the spring/summer of 2003,
organizations around the area started realizing how popular
Krispy Kreme doughnuts were and they imported
them from Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other areas to sell here
and…guess what…they disappeared as soon as the sales
started.
Then on July 22nd, 2003 a miracle happened and Krispy Kreme
opened their store at 7501 Peach St in Summit Township and a
new tourist attraction was created. According to Diane Heath,
general manager of the Peach St. Krispy Kreme, more than
750,000 people have been in the store since it opened. “We
have 200 to 300 sales a day during the week,” she said
adding that the amount of sales increases to more than 500 on
the weekends. “That is 300 to 500 people a day coming in and
that’s not counting the friends and family members who come
in with them for doughnuts, pop or coffee.”
She said that they get all kinds of people stopping by from
people on their way to work in the mornings to people who just
come in for a doughnut, coffee and quiet place to read the
local paper. “We get a lot of people in here who are
traveling and have never tasted a Krispy Kreme doughnut,”
she said. Those are people who have heard about them but
don’t have a KK anywhere in their area.
During the times when the red “Hot Light” is on when
Krispy Kreme is, pardon the pun, HOT! That is when they are
making their doughnuts and what makes that unique is that,
unlike other shops who make their doughnuts in a room separate
from the sales area surrounded by walls…Krispy Kreme has
glass walls and you can stand at watch the entire process from
the mixing of the dough, through the frying and lastly when
that pure sugar glaze is applied. The thing is…if you time
it right…your doughnuts can come right off of the line. And,
as anyone who has had a fresh KK glazed doughnut can tell you,
they are the best and actually melt in your mouth rather than
have to be chewed.
Believe it or not there is a world record for eating KK
doughnuts. The Association of Independent Competitive Eaters
(yes, there is such a group) said that a man named David
“Coondog” O’Karma holds two records for eating KK
doughnuts…one is 12 KK doughnuts in one minute and the other
is 30 KK doughnuts in 5 minutes 28 seconds. Heath said that
they held competitions in the spring and will again in the
fall. “The local record is 15 doughnuts in 5 minutes and we
are open for anyone who wants to come in a try to break it,”
Heath said.
Despite the fact that KK has been becoming healthier their
most popular seller is still there glazed doughnuts. “Yes,
we have been getting healthier in our menu,” Heath said.
“But, I just want to let you know that our glazed doughnuts
have fewer calories than a bagel with crème cheese.”
When asked about their Canadian competitors she said that when
it comes to doughnuts that Tim Horton’s is no competition.
“Our doughnuts are made fresh right here in the store. We do
it all right in front of the customers,” she said. “Their
(Tim Horton’s) doughnuts are brought in frozen and then they
are thawed and baked. We believe that fresh doughnuts taste
better and out customers deserve that. Where they do get us is
breakfasts…we don’t do that yet,” she said with an
emphasis on the word yet.
For those of you interested in getting there in time for the
“Hot Light” here is a schedule of times: Weekdays – 6:30
a.m and 9:30 a.m. Weekends – 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
ArtsErie
Project Grant Applications Now Being Accepted
ArtsErie is now accepting applications for its project grant program.
ArtsErie project grants provide funding for art performances, projects
and exhibits in Erie County. Applications are accepted annually and
reviewed by an independent allocations panel with ratification by
ArtsErie Board of Trustees. Funds are distributed on a
competitive grant basis. Applicants must have 501(c)(3) status.
Project grants of varying amounts are available from three funds,
serving different disciplines:
Arts education projects may apply for up to $2,500 from the Virginia
Vieser Arts Education Fund.
Projects involving music performance may apply for up to $5,000 from
the Clarence E. Beyers Music Performance Fund.
Projects of any artistic discipline may apply for up to $5,000 from
the ArtsErie Unrestricted Project Fund.
Applications must be postmarked by Saturday, August 15, 2009 or
hand-delivered by Monday, August 17, 2009 at 5 p.m. to ArtsErie at 3
East 4th Street, Suite 10, Erie, PA 16507. No applications will be
accepted after the deadline.
