To Our Readers –- PLEASE Make Sure You Read This
By Rob Taylor

I am writing this to let you know that THIS is the last issue of Spotlight Magazine Online. You won’t see it again so we hoped that you have liked it. However, there will be a magazine next week under a new name which shows our ever increasing pride and love of Erie and Erie County. Next week you will get Volume 1 Issue 1 of the next step in our evolution --- ERI Jams Online.

Erie has live theatre that matches anything seen anywhere else in the country. Our four theatres: The Erie Playhouse, All An Act, The Station Dinner Theatre and Director’s Circle, as well as Cambridge Spring’s Riverside Inn offers their audiences the best talent in acting, directing and script writing around.

In sports Erie’s colleges and minor league teams produce not only exciting competitions but has also given the world several MBL, NBA, NHL stars as well as champions who have won in the Olympics, the Super Bowl and the Stanley Cup. There isn’t a season, basketball, baseball, hockey and even NASCAR, that isn’t running in Erie and every year, every season Erie shows up in the major leagues of all of the sports.

Erie also has an unique gathering of artists, writers, musicians, singers, film makers and poets. Erie also offers them the total freedom to express their thoughts, words and images. In the theatres coffee shops, book stores, bars and clubs there is not a week where the arts are not enjoyed and shared by hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

After a meeting lasting several hours we, the staff of Spotlight Online, decided that the name didn’t exactly reflect what we wanted to say about the Erie area.  We needed a name that was more than just that, a name, one that would embrace the essence of the magazine and more importantly our way of showing pride in everything Erie, our hometown, has to offer.

So, starting next week, we will have a new name and a new look but the same mission --- to help promote EVERYTHING Erie has to offer and believe us --- that is a lot.

Director's Circle Opens A Duet Of Comedy

The Directors Circle Theatre is offering the perfect night out for all theatergoers by presenting The White Liars by Peter Shaffer and Men in Suits – Family Values by Jason Milligan. Audiences will have an opportunity to think a little and laugh a lot!

The Drama/comedy The White Liars is a study of the human condition that explores the consequences of telling white lies and more importantly the consequences we face when we deceive ourselves. The White Liars is set in the fortune telling parlor of Sophie Lemberg (Sue Ellen Wojciechowski), a woman with a questionable lineage, who has spent her life pretending to be a Baroness. Sophie is plagued with the memory of Vassi (Eric Armbruster), a former lover whose character appears only in memory and can only be seen and heard by Sophie. Two young men, Frank (Pete Wojciechowski) and Tom (Nick Kikola), arrive seeking the distraction of having their fortune told, however, the audience will soon discover that both men harbor secret agendas. As the layers of lies unravel the audience will glimpse the funny and tragic frailties of each of the characters.

Men in Suits – Family Values is a quick paced, laugh out loud comedy with a twist. This play takes a comedic look at the mafia culture through the characters of Vinnie Rampulo (Karl Seman), a mob killer about to become a “made man”, and his wife Anne Marie (Rachel Peteritis-Greaves) whose observations on life will have the audience in stitches.  Unfortunately for Vinnie and Anne Marie, fate intervenes and the couple finds they have accidentally kidnapped the Boss’s (Joseph J. Spusta) son Tommy (Brennan Staaf). Events then spiral out of control as Vinnie and Anne Marie race against time to return the Boss’s son before they are discovered and someone gets “whacked”.  Pete Wojciechowski, Karen Todd, Eric Armbruster and Nick Kikola complete this colorful cast.

The White Liars and Men in Suits – Family Values open on Thursday, February 26th, and runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 P.M. through March 14th, with a matinee on Sunday, March 8th, at 2:00 P.M. For reservations call the box office at 451- 1153.

Recipe Of The Week

4 Cheese Mac & Cheese

Ingredients
Cooking spray
1 pound elbow macaroni
2 (10-ounce) packages frozen pureed winter squash
2 cups 1 percent lowfat milk
4 ounces extra-sharp Cheddar, grated (about 1 1/3 cups)
2 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, grated (about 2/3 cup)
1/2 cup part-skim ricotta cheese
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon powdered mustard
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
2 tablespoons unseasoned bread crumbs
1 teaspoon olive oil

Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Coat a 9 by 13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the macaroni and cook until tender but firm, about 5 to 8 minutes. Drain and transfer to a large bowl.

Meanwhile, place the frozen squash and milk into a large saucepan and cook over a low heat, stirring occasionally and breaking up the squash with a spoon until defrosted. Turn the heat up to medium and cook until the mixture is almost simmering, stirring occasionally. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the Cheddar, Jack cheese, ricotta cheese, salt, mustard and cayenne pepper. Pour cheese mixture over the macaroni and stir to combine. Transfer the macaroni and cheese to the baking dish.

Combine bread crumbs, Parmesan and oil in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the top of the macaroni and cheese. Bake for 20 minutes. Then broil for 3 minutes so the top is crisp and nicely browned.

Voice Of The Poet

3815 TRASK AVENUE
(BATHROOM)

by Chuck Joy

What manner of old man is this
Looking at me from the mirror?
With his excessively big nose,
His fat face needing shaved so?
How dreadful is his expression!
Opaque and yet too familiar.
Why is such a powerful force
Suddenly present here between us?
Why does it seem I should spend
Every day for the rest of my life
Resisting this person? Wait a minute,
That’s no old man. That’s my father!

A CRACK IN THE WALL

by Rob Taylor

I look both right and left

All I see is a wall made of stone and brick

There are no openings

There are no cracks

I know why it was built

How was it built?

Who laid the first brick

Did it start the day we met?

Did I say the wrong thing?

Was it that I didn't love you the way you wanted?

Am I the only one who created the wall?

I tried to reach you but it was already too high

My heart would not lift me high enough to even see over

What is on your side?

Are you happy there?

Do you have any cracks?

Is there one single brick missing?

One brick where feelings can slip through

If that one brick is gone

If there is a single space

My love can find its way through

Then and only then will the wall crumble

Turning into piles of hate

Piles we can ignore

And we can love again

Fun Craft Ideas

Follow the links for instructions

1. Coffee Can Stilts
If having the kids home makes your house feel like a three-ring circus, you may as well make it official. Fashion a pair of coffee can stilts for each kiddo. Then set your stilt-walkers loose for a day of circus-themed fun.

2. Felt Board
Turn scraps of felt into a fun felt board that's guaranteed to entertain for hours – both at home and on road trips. You can make as many felt accessories as you can dream up!

3. Pinwheels
Pinwheels are fun to play with, but they're even more fun to make. Grab some paper, pencils and pins; and make your own pinwheels. Then, enjoy an afternoon outdoors playing with them.

4. Homemade Popsicles
There's nothing better on a hot day than a popsicle – especially if it's homemade. Bring your little chefs into the kitchen, and make up a batch of strawberry or Jello popsicles. Just don't be surprised if they spend the next several hours staring longingly at the freezer.

5. Stamps
Stamping is the perfect activity for little hands. Learn how to make stamps out of rubber bands or foam meat trays. Then, lay out some paper and a stamp pad, and watch as your kids stamp, stamp, stamp the day away!

6. Crayons
Have a drawer or container full of crayon stubs? Then you've got the start to a fun project. Work alongside your kids to turn those long-neglected crayons into brand new crayons.

7. Garden Rocks
Go on a nature walk to collect interesting rock specimens. Then, hand your kids some paint and a brush, and let them go to work creating their very own garden rocks.

8. Homemade Soaps
Introduce your little ones to the good, clean fun of soap making. You can use basic melt-and-pour techniques to create treasure soap, popsicle soap or a design of your own creation.

9. Stickers
Stickers are fun, but kids sure go through them in a hurry. Work together to create a big batch of homemade stickers, and you'll always have plenty on hand.

10. Rock Candy
Satisfy everyone's sweet tooth with some homemade rock candy. It only takes a few ingredients and a bit of hands-on time to make.

11. Toothbrush Bracelets
Hit the dollar store for some cheap toothbrushes, and make a toothbrush bracelet. Funky and fun!

12. Finger Paint
Finger-painting is the ultimate in ooey gooey fun. Make up a big batch of homemade finger paint, and set your little artists loose.

13. Sidewalk Chalk
Make a bunch of sidewalk chalk, and turn your driveway and sidewalk into a giant canvas.

14. Playdough
Is your stash of store-bought playdough all dried out? If so, call your kids into the kitchen, and teach them how to make their own brightly colored playdough. It's fun to make, and even more fun to play with.

15. Slime
No kid can resist slime. Mix up some colored slime, glow in the dark slime, or  floam

16. Ice Cream in a Baggie
You don't need a fancy ice cream maker to make ice cream. In fact, all you need are a couple plastic bags and a handful of ingredients. Give it a try. Your kids will love you for it.

17. Bubbles
Mix up a batch of homemade bubbles, and send your kids outdoors for some fun.

Last Weekend For Neil Simon's Comedy "The Prisoner of Second Avenue"
February 27th, 28th & March 1st

Mel (Chris Bucci) is a well paid executive of a fancy New York company that has suddenly hit the skids. Mel, too, gets the ax and finds himself the victim of corporate downsizing. His wife Edna (Betsy Butoryak) takes a job to tide them over and she too is sacked.

As if this weren't enough, Mel is fighting a losing battle with the very environs of life. The walls of his apartment are paper thin, making him privy to the social lives of the two German stewardesses next door. His apartment is burgled; and his psychiatrist dies with $23,000 of his money.

Mel does the only thing left for him to do; he has a nervous breakdown.

His siblings (Pam Durst, Ruth Scandale, Carol Hoffman, & Greg Hill) rally around him for support, but only add to his angst.

On the road to recovery, we come to esteem him all the more. For Mel and his wife and people like them have the resilience, the grit to survive.

DIY Network, NFL Stars To Appear At 2009 Erie Home And Garden Show

by Rob Taylor

Spring is just around the corner and thought are surely leaning toward love for a lot of people but the rest of us are thinking about getting down and dirty working in our gardens as well as the budding Bob Vila’s out there who are into home improvements. This weekend (February 26th) is just for them with the opening of the Erie Home and Garden Show at the Bayfront Convention Center, located one block west of State St on the Bayfront Parkway.

The 2009 Home and Garden Show is an upscale event which showcases companies from all over the area related to home improvements, interior design, landscaping as well as tons of help for the weekend gardener. The event will offer informative seminars, interactive exhibits as well as a number of celebrity appearances. Among the celebrities scheduled to appear is DIY Network/TLC star Jason Cameron.

A native of Toledo, Ohio, Jason Cameron is experienced in carpentry and home remodeling, as well as being an outdoorsman and sportsman. He is a familiar face to home improvement fans, having been lead carpenter on the TLC series, While You Were Out. Jason worked his way through college as a carpenter while attending Northern Michigan University. He is also certified as a personal trainer, specializing in strength and conditioning. In his spare time, Jason enjoys working out at the gym, playing volleyball and basketball, and of course, doing carpentry projects. He currently resides with his wife, Mary Ann, in New Jersey.

Also appearing is two time NFL Pro Bowler Brian Moorman. Moorman has played with the Buffalo Bills as their All-pro punter since he was signed as free agent during the Summer of 2001. Moorman’s personal record for a punt was 84 yards and he maintains an average of 43 yards per kick, despite playing in one of the worst climates in the NFL

In 2004 Moorman and his wife, Amber, founded Brian Moorman's PUNT Foundation to make a difference in the lives of children in Western New York who face life threatening illnesses. The mission of the PUNT Foundation is to provide children affected by cancer and their families with the opportunities and support to enjoy the life they fight so hard for. The Foundation provides assistance, valuable family-centered programs and events designed to enrich their lives, and provide them with unique, memorable opportunities

General admission for the Home and garden show are $6.00 although discount ticket coupons are available at www.eriehomeandgarden.com as is a schedule of shows at the event.

Oscar Nominee To be Shown At The Hurst

by T.R. Septaric

Academy award nominated, for best original screenplay, In Bruges will be shown at Mercyhurst's Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center on March 4th at 2:15 and 8:00 p.m.

Synopsis: Bruges, the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travelers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray and Ken, it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry to go and cool their heels in the storybook Flemish city for a couple of weeks. Very much out of place amidst the gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists. Ray, still haunted by the bloodshed in London, hates the place, while Ken, even as he keeps a fatherly eye on Ray's often profanely funny exploits, finds his mind and soul being expanded by the beauty and serenity of the city. But the longer they stay waiting for Harry's call, the more surreal their experience becomes, as they find themselves in weird encounters with locals, tourists, violent medieval art, a dwarf American actor shooting a European art film, Dutch prostitutes, and a potential romance for Ray in the form of Chloë, who may have some dark secrets of her own. And when the call from Harry does finally come, Ken and Ray's vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of darkly comic proportions and surprisingly emotional consequences

Tickets for the showings are $5 for adults and $4 for seniors and students

This Week At Jr's Last Laugh

Feb 26-28

Tom Foss

Tom is a high-energy, highly animated comic, who acts out his fascinating (and immense) archive of jokes reflecting on himself, his family, his home of West Virginia, and the world around him. It’s hard to tell if his material is simple, or brilliantly intellectual, but those who watch Tom will be laughing so hard, it doesn’t matter. Regardless of how complex (or in-complex) Tom’s words are, laughing at his jokes will be one of the easiest things you’ll ever do.

Featuring: TA Marks
