Millcreek Mall Food Court Leaves A Lot To Be Desired

by T.R. Septaric

I have heard so much about the new food court up at the Millcreek Mall that I went there with my thoughts that it was going to be something really special....it wasn't!

Yes, it looked great. The large windows above the opening, the spacious area and all the seating left me hoping that it was worth the trip. Then I looked at the restaurants or should I say lack of restaurants in the food court. They had one Italian restaurant, one Japanese restaurant and a Chinese restaurant. There is a sub shop and a pizza shop down the hall but there was not one bloody place, other than Ruby Tuesday's at the other end of the mall, to get a hamburger or a hot dog!

I have been to food courts all over...St Catherine's, Toronto and Niagara Falls Ontario, New Orleans, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Chicago and a lot of other places and never, not once, did I ever see a food court without at least one hamburger/hotdog stand. Even the Ashtabula Mall has a Wendy's and a Mr. Hero IN their food court...in addition to their Chinese, Italian  and other shops.

Within the last 10-15 years restaurants such as Burger King, Church's Chicken and yes, even Mc Donald's have left the mall, either closing or finding locations outside the mall proper. This left the place open for some "sit down" restaurants, pizza joints and, Chinese restaurants as well as a couple coffee shops.

When I was there the entire population of the food court was 12 people and most of the were just drinking sodas.

I also checked out some of the prices at the stalls and one caught my eye and that was at the Chinese place. A three item platter was $6.99. Guess what...you go out on Peach St to the Imperial China Buffet or Top's Buffet you can get as much of as many items as you want for the same price.

The simple way to say this is....if you want to save money, get more food and maybe a hamburger or two...stick to Peach St. The new food court at the Millcreek Mall doesn't have the selection, the prices or anything else that the other places do. Now, I do have to say that they DO have pretty seats, good lighting and a really nice restroom but that is about all.

Make Sure You Get Caught In A3's Net

by Rob Taylor

I have got to say that I have always been a fan of British comedy. I spend a LOT of evenings watching their shows like "Coupling", "The Office" and "Stacey and Gavin".  A lot of people don’t get the humour and consider it dry but I love it and A3’s “Caught In The Net” is right up there with anything the BBC has come up with.

The story is about a guy who spends 18 years living a double life…literally. He has two beautiful wives who live just miles apart. The twist is that he has a son with Mary, played by Amy Welker Rowe and a daughter by wife number two, Barbara, played by KC McCloskey.

Amy Welker Rowe, David Mitchell, Dave DiCola and KC McCloskey in "Caught In The Net."

Anyway, the kids, Gavin and Vicki, played by Nick Kiddo and Julie Conroe, meet on the internet and start really liking each other. When they decide to meet each other their dad, John Smith, played by David W. Mitchell, realizes that there is no way that can be a good thing…not only can he be outed but, well, if they fell in love…you can guess it from there. So, between trying to keep the kids from meeting and keeping the wives apart John is running back and forth between the London subrubs, faking his own death and a few other things. It makes this.

Yes, for those of you who are movie freaks like me….this is a remake of a 1959 Clifton Webb, Dorothy McGuire film called “The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker” where a man had two wives and twelve kids in two separate towns. Personally, I loved that movie and I watch it every time it is on but “Caught In The Net” is at least 1000% funnier that that movie ever was.

I loved the cast. The moms, especially Barbara, were sexy as hell! The entire cast were all perfect for their roles. The comedic timing was there. The accents, except for one, were spot on…to steal a phrase from the Brits. And, miracle of miracles the spray dye in Larry Lewis’ hair actually made his hair grey instead of the carrot orange they had in “12 Angry Men”. (See Larry, I told you I was going to mention it!!!!)

There was one character that made the play for me and he was Stanley Gardner who was played by Dave DiCola. I was laughing my a&& of every time he was on stage. My biggest concern was, now I’m being serious about this, that his head was going to explode. Gardner was the one man who knew John’s secret and he managed to get stuck with, at one point both wives and both kids. The best part was watching him melt down as he kept getting blamed for locking people in the various rooms and keeping his story straight at the same time.

This play is funny, entertaining and well worth the effort of finding the All An Act Theatre and it bloody well be on the things that you should see before its gone. I’ll tell you I never smile and I rarely laugh but this performance was so funny I was either smiling or laughing the whole time.

One last thing…in the months I have been reviewing plays at A3 one thing I have noticed is that he team of Larry Lewis and David Mitchell has a magic that no other theatre has. They are all looking for it but they just miss it. I am not sure what it is, or how they do it, but the two of them are making the works performed at A3 some of the best, most enjoyable shows in town. The remarkable thing is that they not only work at A3 but the two of them are also a major part of The Station Dinner Theatre where their work is equally as high quality as that of A3.

A3’s season ended with this play and I am really looking forward to seeing what everyone connected with this small theatre can, and will do, when the season starts all over again in February.
