The Metropolitan Opera Comes To Tinseltown

Fathomevents.com is bringing the world famous Metropolitan Opera to Erie’s Tinseltown, 1910 Rotunda Drive as well as Mercyhurst College. For more information on these or other events call 814-866-3390 or check out www.fathomevents.com for a complete schedule.

An encore presentation of Puccini’s La Rondine will be shown at Tinseltown on Wednesday, January 21st, 2009 at 7 PM in all time zones. Please note: not all theatres showing the live transmission will participate in an encore showing.

Opera’s charismatic real-life duo, Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna provide the star power to deliver this ravishing romance from the world’s most popular opera composer. Gheorghiu plays the kept woman who gambles on true love, and Alagna is the man who makes her question the cost of her glittering existence. Nicolas Joël directs the new production of this gorgeously melodic look at love. Marco Armiliato conducts.

Second is a live transmission of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice which will be shown for one day only on Saturday, January 24th at 1 PM.

This complete vision for Gluck, with production and choreography by Mark Morris and costumes by Isaac Mizrahi, features the artistry of Stephanie Blythe in the title role. The alluring Danielle de Niese is Orfeo’s adored wife, Euridice, who inspires the hero to face the underworld for her sake. Music Director James Levine conducts.

An encore presentation of this performance will be exhibited in select theatres on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009, at 7 PM in all time zones.

…You Might Be An Erie Native If

by T.R. Septaric

There are some things that Erie natives have picked up over the years. Here are just a few of the ways to tell if you are a TRUE Erie native.

1)      If you walk into an out-of-town restaurant and order a Greek Dog and the waitress asks you what that is…you might be an Erie native!

2)      If you go outside in a tee shirt in 45 degree weather…you might be an Erie native!

3)      If you can see four Country Fairs within a few blocks of each other…you might be an Erie native!

4)      If you can see a football, basketball and hockey game in one weekend, in the same building…you might be an Erie native!

5)      If you pay an extra $9 to fish down the street from your house…you might be an Erie native!

6)      If you drive to another state to save money on milk or gas…you might be an Erie native!

7)      If you watch a Detroit Tiger baseball game and say “I saw him play at the Uht last year"…you might be an Erie native!

8)      If you’ve driven a friend into Erie and had to try to explain the smoke stack outside of the library…you might be an Erie native!

9)      If you know what a Seawolf or a Bay Hawk is…you might be an Erie native!

10)   If you STILL use the Boston Store clock to tell time…you may be an Erie native!

11)   If you still call Dobbin’s Landing the Public Dock…you may be an Erie native!

12)   If you spend an entire summer looking for an open beach on Presque Isle…only to find one the last day of the season…you might be an Erie native!

Recipe Of The Week

Chicken And Mushroom Marsala

Ingredients
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil (extra virgin olive oil works well)
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, 4 to 6 oz. each
salt to taste
freshly ground black pepper
flour for dredging
8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
1/3 cup Marsala wine
2/3 cup low-sodium chicken broth
2 tablespoons chopped parsley

Directions
1. heat the olive oil in a large, non-stick skillet. While the oil is heating, season the chicken with salt and pepper and dredge it in flour.
2. sauté the chicken over medium-high heat until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove the chicken to a platter and keep warm.
3. add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender. add the wine, stir with a wooden spoon to release any caramelized bits that may be stuck to the pan and cook until the wine is almost completely evaporated.
4. add the chicken broth, chicken, and any juices that have accumulated on the platter. simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 10 minutes.
5. remove the chicken to a clean serving platter and keep warm. simmer the broth mixture until it has reduced by half, about 5 minutes. spoon the sauce over the chicken, sprinkle with parsley and serve

Voices Of The Erie Poets

417 W 8

by Chuck Joy

When Kerouac was a nobody

he lived there

with a series of male roommates.

One was Neal Cassady, he was a deejay

I think. Worked at a station only played oldies

except of course those songs were all new then.

Another one was Allen Ginsberg. He wasn’t a poet

yet. He played steel guitar

for one country-western band and then another.

Charley Parker lived across the street.

He used to wander up and down the block.

Made you wonder, what was he thinking?

One day a couch appeared

along the curb. I heard

an abortion had been performed on it.

Those were the days.

Greg Corso roadied for this one band, the French Canadians

Jackson Pollock tended bar at Shaggy Dogg’s.

Kerouac himself sometimes appeared

depressed by his lack of success, although

it may have been instead a lack of alcohol and marijuana.

One day he met that nurse,

what was her name? Sylvia?

Orson Welles did the movie of their wedding.

After that they moved away. 417 W 8

remained, a home for others even less famous,

until a woman making chili burned the building to the ground.

Bizarre News Stories

Angry husband throws cat at wife
A man in New York state is facing charges after throwing a cat at his wife during an argument.
The cat-throwing occurred when 25-year-old Paul A. Wood, of Palmyra, Wayne County, got into a domestic dispute with his wife at about 5:30am last Friday.

In addition to chucking the cat at his wife, Wood also punched a hole in the wall of their trailer park home.

The cat – which wasn't declawed, struck his wife on the back. Neither the cat nor the woman were injured in the cat-throwing, according to authorities.

He now faces charges of fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree harassment, and cruelty to animals.

Robber Caught After Putting Down Gun

A Tampa man suspected of armed robbery apparently forgot that the key to a successful armed robbery is hanging on to the gun. Police say 42-year-old Jerome Haggins, armed with a pistol, entered a Tampa home Saturday night, ordered six men to the ground and demanded they give up their wallets and jewelry. He then forced them to take off their clothes and noticed that one of the men had not given up his bracelet.

Police say Haggins put his pistol on a table, walked over to the man and snatched the bracelet. But while Haggins was taking the bracelet, police say another victim grabbed the gun and pointed it at Haggins. The would-be victims held Haggins until police arrived. Haggins faces multiple charges, including armed robbery. He was being held without bail set.

Director's Circle Offers The Must See Funeral Of The Year

by Rob Taylor

I have only been to a couple funerals in my life and both times I got into the best discussions ever. When my mother died…I didn’t spend the time mourning…I spent it discussing the increasing length of my hair with my loving cousin. The other was my dad. A friend and I spent a couple hours discussing whether or not my second cousin was a cousin or not. The Director’s Circle Theatre production of Pap’s Funeral is about exactly that…the interaction between three sisters after the death of the obviously overly abusive grandfather.

The story is about sisters Juliana (Barb Sambroak), Catsy (Kirsten McCain) and Madeline (Teresa Testrake) as they gather at an Erie funeral home for the wake of their grandfather. The thing is, outside of a VERY old hooker, they are the only ones who show up.

Eventually, the stories of being locked in closets, being forced to serve the old man head to toe as well as physical abuse start to come out and you realize that the man in the coffin is lucky to even have his granddaughters show up. Basically the only thing that this old man didn’t do was sexually molest the girls.

It was easy to see the anger grow in all of the characters, especially Juliana, who had been holding everything in since she was a young girl.

I have got to say that the three women they cast in the lead roles were perfect. They worked together seamlessly and they played off of each other’s emotions as if they weren’t in a play. It was as if they were actually living the parts for real and that they weren’t on a stage. The way the four of them worked, especially in the final scene had me thinking, remembering and crying my eyes out. All I can say to the three of them…I hope to see the three of you together again in a future show.

I also have to say that I have to give credit to the writer, Erie’s own Monica Lewis. Her script rocked. It took you from laughing to total anger to crying and back to laughter over and over again. If you add the directing talent of Caryl Unseld you have a show that isn’t a should see but it becomes a MUST SEE!

Pap’s Funeral is being billed as a comedy. The director told me it is a irreverent comedy. The Showcase called it a dramedy. Personally, I think that they are all wrong. Yes, there are more than a few laughs throughout Pap’s Funeral but it is a drama pure and simple. If you go in thinking of it as a drama you will enjoy this show a lot more.

Would I recommend it…definitely! It is well worth the trouble of finding a parking space, taking an elevator ride and walking a long hallway to get to the theatre. For two hours your emotions are going to be taken on a ride you will just love.

Directors Circle is located on the second floor of the Renaissance Building. Pap’s Funeral will be running until Jan 31st. Call 814-451-1153 for more information.

"Taking great strides forward this year were All An Act Productions' Larry Lewis and David W. Mitchell. Their 2008 shows began and ended with proficiently performed farces by Ray Cooney. They also met the rigorous demands of Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", the challenge of their first musical "The Last 5 Years", high gravitas in "12 Angry Men", and geriatric warmth in "A Bench In The Sun". Audience growth bodes well for the future."
--Floyd Lawrence, Showcase Magazine 12/25/08
